About Greiner & Associates
Greiner and Associates was established in 1987 when Peter Greiner completed degrees in Architecture and Environmental Design at the University of Tasmania. Tessa Greiner assists in the practice.
Peter specialises in the design of passive solar homes, beach and bush homes as well as community and small commercial buildings; most of which can be found in the north and north west of Tasmania.
Peter enjoys working with clients who want something uniquely theirs and thinks that thoughtful design greatly influences how people appreciate their day-to-day life. Waking up to see a small patch of sunlight striking a favourite picture provides a very special level of comfort.
Experimenting with form and materials, Peter changes heights and levels to create functional buildings with complex interiors that give the illusion of space, whilst at the same time showing the underlying beauty and form of the materials used.
In 2007, Peter and Tessa completed their own ‘experimental’ home near the coast of Northern Tasmania. As owner builders, they were able to experience first hand the satisfaction of their ideas becoming reality. Here they decided to exploit the tensile strength of curved timber used in traditional boat building to interesting effect on the underside of their curved roof. Careful positioning and orientation of spaces catch winter sunlight, creating a strong union between indoor and outdoor; decks and paved areas become external rooms – used nearly all year round – even in Tasmania.
In 2016 they moved to Launceston to build another experimental home in an older established suburb on a steep, rocky and narrow block, sloping towards the south with very limited access from the road to the north. An interesting design challenge which involves providing adequate access to sunlight, while maintaining maximum privacy. This home is now completed .
As well as conducting a private practice as an architectural designer, Peter has for many years taught architecture at the University of Tasmania. Peter has also enjoyed teaching passive solar and interior design courses in northern Tasmania.
Peter and Tessa’s other interests include travelling, caring for the environment and involvement in social justice issues, photography, ceramics and music.
